Tanya: I am so happy it’s finally summer! Is that where we’re going?
Susie: Nah, that beach’s pretty dirty. Let’s go to this one.
Tanya: Alright. This looks like a good spot.
Susie: Yeah, this is perfect, not too close to the water and not too close to the bar. Yeah, this’ll do.
Tanya: Alright. So the plan is to spend the whole day here, right? I brought sandwiches and… oh, I almost forgot! Look at my new sunglasses!
Susie: Ooh! Nice shades!
Tanya: Thanks! … and I just. Oh no…
Susie: What?
Tanya: I think I forgot to bring sunscreen.
Susie: Oh, that’s okay. You can use mine. It’s SPF 50.
Tanya: Okay, perfect! Thanks! Where is it?
Susie: Here. It’s in my bag. You can take it. I’m just going to go get us a couple of beers. I’ll be right back.
Tanya: Okay. I’ve found it by the way. Thanks!
[Clock ticking]
Tanya: Okay, I think we’re ready to go home. I mean, we’ve been lying in the sun for what? 6? 7 hours? We should get going.
Susie: Okay, let me just- What happened to you?!
Tanya: What? What is it?
Susie: You’re completely red.
Tanya: What? No! That’s impossible, I wore your sunscreen. I’m- I’m just tan.
Susie: That is not a tan. You’re sunburned.
Tanya: What? I wore your sunscreen! I did! Look, I’ve been putting it on every two hours!
Susie: That?! That is not sunscreen! That is my lotion!

'Ooh! Nice shades!'
• Is the word “shades” slang for a bikini or sunglasses?
Shades is slang for sunglasses. Instead of saying, "Hey, look at my sunglasses," you can say, "Hey, look at my shades," or, "I just bought a new pair of shades," for example.
• How many pairs of shades do you own?
Right now, with me, I only have one pair of shades. I have two more pairs back at home in Valencia in the storage room. Those are the-- you know, the cheap ones that you can buy for what? $3, $4 at some stores. Those are the ones that my mom always told me, "Please, don't buy those, you're going to go blind." Which I don't know if it's really bad for your eyes, but this is what my mom used to tell me. Now, I only have one pair that I regularly use and they're the nicer ones. They're not super expensive, but they're mom-approved.

'I think I forgot to bring sunscreen.'
• What is sunscreen used for? To protect yourself from the sun or to prevent sand from sticking to your body at the beach?
You use sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun, to protect your skin from the sun. It's just that white liquid thing that you put all over your body to make sure that your skin stays protected. Although I'm just going to throw this idea out there, it would be nice to invent something that could prevent sand from sticking to your body when you go to the beach because that's also a big, big problem.
• Do you always wear sunscreen when you go to the beach?
Now, I do. I wear it pretty much every day on my face. When I go to the beach, yes, I try to wear it on my body as well. There's a reason for that but you're going to have to wait until the end of the episode to hear that story.

'Yeah. It’s SPF 50. It’s fine.'
• What does SPF stand for? Seriously Pretty Fabulous or Sun Protection Factor?
It's Seriously Pretty Fabulous-- I'm just kidding. [chuckles] It's Sun Protection Factor, obviously. Not sure how many people actually knew that. I didn't know that. I knew it had something to do with the sun, but I wasn't sure what it stood for, so now, I know. Sun Protection Factor.
• What does the SPF number tell you?
Again, I think it tells you: the higher it is, the more protected, so to speak, you are from the negative effects of the sun. You want that number to be as high as possible. I believe the highest SPF is 50, but I may be wrong, so double-check.
• What SPF do you usually use?
Now, I use SPF 50 both on my face and my body. In the past, I used to try to go as low as possible, but now, I have gotten a little bit better about taking care of my skin. I know what the sun can do to you, so I always wear SPF 50. I guess I heard that if it's lower than 30, it's really not doing anything for you. The higher, the better.

'What? No! That’s impossible, I wore your sunscreen. I’m- I’m just tan.'
• If you’re tan, is your skin darker or lighter than usual?
If you're tan, your skin is darker than usual.
• What should you do if you want to be tan?
If you want to be tan, you have to lie in the sun or go to a tanning salon, where I don't know what happens over there because I've never been to one, but you come out of there and you're tan. If you don't want to waste any money, just go lie in the sun and wait a few hours, make sure you wear sunscreen, and then you're going to be tan.
• Are you tan right now?
I am as pale as it gets and basically see-through, you can see through me, that's how little sun my skin has seen over the past few months. [chuckles] You probably look at me right now and be like, "Lara, are you okay? You're looking a little pale," so no, I'm not tan at all.
Sunburned
'That is not a tan. You’re sunburned.'
• If you’re sunburned, does that mean you’ve spent too much time in the sun or very little time in the sun?
If you're sunburned, that means you've spent too much time in the sun. You were probably not even wearing sunscreen and it's just bad.
• If you’re sunburned, what color does your skin get?
Your skin tends to get redder. Obviously, the paler you are the more, the sunburn is going to show.
• Do you feel pain if you get sunburned?
Oh, boy. Do you feel pain? It is one of the worst feelings ever. I don't know if you've ever gotten sunburned. I personally have, quite a few times in my life. It's just unbearable because usually, what happens when you're sunburned is that you don't realize right away that you're sunburned. You're out, you're at the beach, whatever, you get home, you take a shower, everything seems fine then you start to look a little red. Then I think it's really at nighttime that it hits you because you go to bed and anything that touches your skin hurts. Even lying in bed and trying to sleep is impossible when you're sunburned because no matter how you move, it's just really, really painful. One of the worst feelings ever, really.
• Think about a time when you were sunburned. What had happened? How did you feel?
I forgot if I've already told this story, but this happened when I was a teenager and this is the reason why I wear sunscreen these days because I didn't use to. The only time I would wear a sunscreen was when my mom was telling me to or forcing me to. Otherwise, I was just like, "Please, I want to be tan. I don't care about sunscreen. This is just going to slow things down. I need to speed things up." I remember this one time I was out all day, I was at the beach with a friend of mine. We got home at night and I realized that I was sunburned, but what was unusual about it is that my face was particularly sunburned. I remember not thinking much of it that night, but then the following morning, I woke up and my friend was like, "What the hell is wrong with your face?" I went, I looked at myself in the mirror, and my entire face was covered in blisters. They were filled with this liquid. It was disgusting. It really looked like someone had cracked an egg open on my face. That's what it looked like. That's the best way I have to describe it. I remember panicking. I remember calling my mom. Obviously, she was like, "I told you so, you had to wear sunscreen. This is because you didn't wear sunscreen." I was just like, "Okay, what's going to happen?" She said, "Well, it's going to scar, you're going to get spots." She was right to an extent, I did get this one very dark spot on my cheek, but then thankfully, it wasn't too bad. The scarring wasn't too bad, but I got really scared. I think I was maybe 16 at that time and that's when I started to wear sunscreen every single time I go to the beach, especially on my face because I'm traumatized by that one time. Guys, please, wear sunscreen.
