So, I thought we could start with a quick run around the neighborhood, then I’ve bought plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables for a nice smoothie. At 11 we have brunch with my friend Mary and her husband, then we… What’s wrong? Aren’t you excited?
Ben: Uh- I mean… I just woke up.
Mia: Okay. Someone’s cranky when they wake up. What happened to you? You got up on the wrong side of bed?
Ben: It’s not that. Babe, can we- Can we just talk about this after I drink my coffee? I’m just a little groggy. You know, it’s 6 in the morning… I just need to fully wake up and-
Mia: Then why do you wake up at the crack of dawn if you’re in such a bad mood when you wake up early?
Ben: But, but , but- You’re the one who woke me up!

Questions

Oh my God. Guys, that made me sleepy. I was trying to do the fake yawn and it turned out to be a real yawn. Probably this is a good episode to record now, that way it'll wake me up, hopefully.

Rise and shine!

'Rise and shine! Good morning, beautiful!'

• When would you tell someone to rise and shine? Before they wake up or right after they’ve woken up?

You would tell them before they wake up, in order to wake them up. If someone's sleeping, you want them to wake up, you would say 'rise and shine'.

• Can you say ‘rise and shine’ with a serious tone?

No, you would sound like a psycho if you did. Usually, 'rise and shine' is said like it's almost a song in a way. It sounds like this "Rise and shine". It's a happy, cheerful phrase that is supposed to encourage someone to wake up in the morning.

• Would you like to be woken up by someone saying “Rise and shine!”?

No, absolutely not. I don't like to be woken up, in general. I like to wake up naturally or if I have to wake up at a certain time I prefer to set my alarm. I never liked say when, for example, my mom would wake me up. I didn't like that. Having someone say 'Rise and shine' the first thing in the morning, I couldn't be able to handle it so, no. When I was in the States I had an alarm clock and one of the things that it said in the morning to wake you up would be, rise and shine. In fact, it was the first thing that it would say and I found that pretty annoying.

Cranky

'Someone’s cranky when they wake up.'

• If you’re cranky, are you in a good mood or in a bad mood?

If you're cranky you are in a bad mood. You're not happy.

• Is being cranky usually temporary or permanent?

Usually being cranky is a temporary state. There's people that are always cranky, but normally you are just fine most of the time, and then every now and then you are in a bad mood or you are cranky.

• What can make you feel cranky?

I think this really depends on the person. Personally, I feel cranky when I'm tired. That's definitely a thing. I'm just a lot more irritable. I get angry more easily. I'm just in a bad mood when I'm tired. I definitely get cranky. Also, when I'm hungry. If I'm hungry and you don't give me food right away, my boyfriend and I have had so many fights about this, I definitely get cranky. I know that about myself. I don't like that about myself, but I can't help it.

• Are you cranky when you wake up in the morning?

No. Funnily enough I know that many people are. Many people just don't want to be talked to in the morning and they're just very cranky, but I wake up in a great mood most of the times. I think, yeah, I wake up and I'm not cranky at all. Unless something happened the night before or the day before then I might be a little cranky, but if not I'm usually pretty happy in the morning.

Get up on the wrong side of bed

'What happened to you? You got up on the wrong side of bed?'

• How do you feel if you get up on the wrong side of bed? Happy and cheerful or irritable and unhappy?

Definitely the second one, you are irritable, you are unhappy, you are cranky. You're just not in a good mood.

• If someone says you got up on the wrong side of bed, do they think your behavior is unusual or not?

If someone makes this comment and they say something like, "What, you woke up on the wrong side of bed?" that means that they think your behavior is unusual and they don't think that there's a reason for it because when you say "I woke up on the wrong side of bed" that just means that inexplicably, for no reason, I am not in a good mood, and that's not how you usually are. If someone's always cranky, if someone is always angry and just not in a good mood, you wouldn't tell them "Hey, you got up on the wrong side of bed," because they're always like that. There's nothing special about that day. You only use it when someone is behaving differently from the way that they usually behave.

• How often do you wake up on the wrong side of bed?

Like I said, I'm usually in a pretty good mood when I wake up in the morning. There are, I think every once in a while, maybe once a month, I do get up on the wrong side of bed and for no reason, at least I can't think of a reason, but I'm just in a bad mood. I'm just not very happy, that's all. Thankfully it doesn't happen very often.

Groggy

'Can we just talk about this after I drink my coffee? I’m just a little groggy.'

• If you’re feeling groggy, do you feel good or not?

If you're feeling groggy, do you feel good or not? No, if you are feeling groggy, you're not feeling that good. You're feeling a little tired and just weak, unsteady. You don't feel at your best.

• What can make you feel groggy?

I think groggy is often associated with being sleepy. It's especially that feeling that you get when you wake up in the morning and you're still tired, so you just need a little bit of time to feel fully energetic and ready to start the day.

• Do you feel groggy in the morning or do you know someone who does?

I usually don't feel groggy in the morning. Like I said, I wake up, I have lots of energy. I want to make the most of my morning so no, I don't feel groggy in the morning, but sometimes I do feel groggy when I wake up from a nap, especially if it's a long nap and especially if I took the nap right after eating, then I'll wake up and I will feel groggy for, I don't know, half an hour, sometimes even an hour or so. I don't like that feeling and that's why I try to avoid taking naps after lunch.

At the crack of dawn

'Then why do you wake up at the crack of dawn...?'

• If something happens at the crack of dawn, when does it happen? Very early or very late in the morning?

If something happens at the crack of dawn it happens very early. It doesn't have to be at dawn, but it's just an expression to say that it happens very early in the morning.

• Do you wake up at the crack of dawn?

No, not anymore, I used to. There was a time in my life when I used to wake up at 5:00 AM, 6:00 AM just because I wanted to have enough time in the morning to relax, get ready. I didn't like to be rushed. Now that I work from home though, I prefer to wake up a little later. I think now I wake up at around, I want to say 7:00 AM because my boyfriend's alarm goes off at 7:00 AM, which I don't like. Every morning I hate him a little bit for that. I think naturally I would wake up at around 8:00 AM, 8:30 AM. So no, I don't think you can say that I wake up at the crack of dawn.

      1. Hi Amira! Thanks for leaving a comment! Is what your wrote true? Regardless, great job! Let me go over a few things that have to do with the language we looked at in the podcast:

        1. I’m an early bird ✔️ you’ve used this expression correctly! Just be careful because you used the verb ‘to be’ twice.
        2. Rise and shine ✔️ (although this isn’t something you would chant, you would simply say it
        3. cranky ❌ careful with the spelling but you understood the meaning 😊
        4. I wake up on the wrong side of the bed ✔️ but don’t forget the personal pronoun (I)
        5. I wake up at the crack of dawn ✔️

        Well done, Amira! 👏
